The Clam Diggers Association Response to the NOAA Proposal at Yaquina Bay

Posted by Webmaster on Oct 26, 2009 in Clamming in Oregon |

Good Morning my fellow clam diggers.  The attached revised letter originally dated October 24th is the Clam Diggers Association’s response to the proposed NOAA port facility on Yaquina at Newport.  Oregon clam diggers are going to loose access to a large portion of the tidal flats associated with the development of the NOAA port facility in Yaquina Bay.   I encourage each of you to read our letter to ODFW and make your opinion known to Doug Cottam, the North Coast Wildlife Biologist for ODFW or Bob Buckman the Central Coast District Fish Biologist.  You can count on both Doug Cottam and Bob Buckman to be honest and forthright.  You can reach both Doug Cottam and Bob Buckman at: Bay

NOAA move to Newport is starting to show more negative then positive. Even within its NOAA ranks the view is not positive by those on the ships and those who must support the ships. Newport looses a recreational area. It gains no jobs because you have to be qualified for the job to get the job. That means outsider come in. The ships are only there maybe 3 months out of the year. Oh and the majority of NOAA scientist are in Seattle just like the majority of OSU scientist are in Corvallis.
Let’s recap
Newport doesn’t get 175 jobs (or whatever number they estimated).
Newport does not bring the ship closer to the scientist.
Newport looses a major recreational area for its citizens.

Sounds like a winner for the people of Newport

We have no objection to NOAA making Yaquina Bay their Home Port. We do object to any entity cherry picking essential habitat; especially when there are other sites available. We find the exclusion zone objectionable. It seems ever since Oklahoma City and 9/11 we restrict public access for security reasons. All you have to do is read the paper for reports of high profile secure sites that are attacked almost daily by terrorist. We need to take security measures but not at the expense of our freedom. Thanks for taking the time to respond to our letter, Bill

what are they doing??

What the heck is the NOAA even doing up there off of that coast line?? Thats the question that needs to be asked. what kind of research are they doing exactly?? what does the research consist of????!!! Go research that in great depth fishermen.
Its probably more poison spraying on to the ocean, and weather modification in the name of “science’?? Ask the tough questions already.. or you’ll Just get more dead crabs and more”freak” tornadoes.
