Question: What happened to the people who used to make the sculptures out of driftwood on Highway 101 heading north toward Hauser?
Answer: They graduated. Those driftwood artists were students at the Oregon Marine Institute of Biology in Charleston.
“It was traditional for some time,” said biology professor Nora Terwilliger. “The students came up with some marvelous creations. They had fish, crabs and whales.”
OIMB staff encouraged and participated in the annual effort, but eventually it came to an end, she said.
“There is always the possibility that people will get out there and be inspired to make these natural sculptures,” Terwilliger said.
