John Gunther:

The first hole I played at Bandon Trails years ago for a preview story was No. 9 and it still stands out as my favorite. The par 5 is 525 yards and looks longer. The contrast of the fairways, several big bunkers and the surrounding forest make it a beauty.

Ron Jackimowicz:

This par 4 plays 393 yards and weaves between two large fairway bunkers. My fourth shot landed on the front of the green with the pin toward the back. It was all uphill, so I decided to try to give it a nice roll, and the 45-footer found the back of the cup for a tidy little 5 and my longest made putt of the summer.

In golf, whenever a player intends to make a full swing the rule of thumb is that you should stand with your feet, knees, hips and shoulders on a line that is parallel to the line of shot - a position described as being "square" to the target.

Read story Strong bunker play requires good set-up and practice By Kevin Wheeler, Forest Hills Golf Pro Publisehd: Friday, June 12, 2009

Bunker play is an important part of scoring on the golf course. Better players would rather be in the sand than in the rough, because it is easier to judge a bunker shot than the thickness of the rough.
