OPHIR - For a golf course with only nine greens, Cedar Bend Golf Club has a major emphasis on playing 18 holes.

The course sets its green fees to encourage going around twice. For adults, nine holes costs $25, but 18 holes is just $5 more. (The junior rate of $5 for nine holes or $7 for 18 is hard to beat.)

Two flags on each green. And at least two tee boxes on each hole. What a concept. Cedar Bend is a nine-hole course that really plays like it's a full 18.

OK, I admit it takes a little getting used to. It can be confusing walking up the first fairway and seeing a yellow and a red flag waving at you from the green.

John Gunther:

Though I don't always play them well, I like bi-level greens, and No. 6/15 is a perfect example. It's not terribly long, measuring 134 to 144 yards, but it's a tough green to hit, and then a tough putt once you get there.

Ron Jackimowicz:

No. 8/17 gets the nod this week. A bridge leads you across the pond to an island tee area. Your tee shot must carry the pond, and then avoid two well placed fir trees to hit the fairway. I made up for the double-bogey on No. 8 with a near-birdie on 17.

We have all felt the anguish of three-putting a green after hitting a very good approach shot. Not only do we have to deal with the inner voice shouting quietly at ourselves, but we might have to endure the feeling of letting down a partner, or unwillingly accept those infamous ribbings from playing companions, or worse, maybe the loss of a few dollars.

Read story Practice proper alignment for more consistent ball striking By Jim Wakeman, PGA Professional, Bandon Crossings Publisehd: Friday, July 17, 2009

In golf, whenever a player intends to make a full swing the rule of thumb is that you should stand with your feet, knees, hips and shoulders on a line that is parallel to the line of shot - a position described as being "square" to the target.

Read story Strong bunker play requires good set-up and practice By Kevin Wheeler, Forest Hills Golf Pro Publisehd: Friday, June 12, 2009

Bunker play is an important part of scoring on the golf course. Better players would rather be in the sand than in the rough, because it is easier to judge a bunker shot than the thickness of the rough.
