Ocean Dunes Golf Links Tuesday, August 11, 2009

The last time The World toured the golf courses of the South Coast, Ocean Dunes in Florence was a little different.

The course hasn't changed. It still plays a little more than 6,000 yards from the back tees, the fairways are still narrow in places and houses still line five of the holes.

Keeping an eye out for birdies Tuesday, August 11, 2009

Playing every week sure has made a difference for both Ron and me.

We're hitting the ball well more consistently, getting better distance off the tee, and seemingly improving in every area except putting as we go from course to course with varying speeds on the greens.

John Gunther:

I love creative par 3s, and though I had by far my worst score in relation to par at Ocean Dunes on No. 12, it's my favorite hole on the course. The shot across the forested canyon to a narrow green is both scenic and intimidating. A hillside behind the green will stop many shots hit too long, a good place to miss. Make sure you clear the foliage. I didn't and took a 7.

Ron Jackimowicz:

No. 6 is a 300-yard, par 4 that is a dogleg left with a narrow landing area about 100 yards from the green. My 4-iron found the right side of the fairway, leaving a full pitching wedge that I hit to within 25 feet and two-putted for par. One of my three pars, helping me to a 47 on the front nine.

We have all felt the anguish of three-putting a green after hitting a very good approach shot. Not only do we have to deal with the inner voice shouting quietly at ourselves, but we might have to endure the feeling of letting down a partner, or unwillingly accept those infamous ribbings from playing companions, or worse, maybe the loss of a few dollars.

Read story Keep your grips clean for longer life span By Jon Dodson, Bandon Golf Supply Publisehd: Friday, July 24, 2009

Stop to think for a moment, when was the last time you had new grips put on your clubs? Have the grips ever been changed?

How about the last time you cleaned your clubs? When you did clean them, did you clean the grips as well as the club heads?

Read story Practice proper alignment for more consistent ball striking By Jim Wakeman, PGA Professional, Bandon Crossings Publisehd: Friday, July 17, 2009

In golf, whenever a player intends to make a full swing the rule of thumb is that you should stand with your feet, knees, hips and shoulders on a line that is parallel to the line of shot - a position described as being "square" to the target.

Read story Strong bunker play requires good set-up and practice By Kevin Wheeler, Forest Hills Golf Pro Publisehd: Friday, June 12, 2009

Bunker play is an important part of scoring on the golf course. Better players would rather be in the sand than in the rough, because it is easier to judge a bunker shot than the thickness of the rough.
