John Gunther:

Pacific Dunes has five exceptional par 3s, each providing different challenges. My favorite is the 11th, just because of its aesthetic beauty. The hole plays slightly uphill 131 yards into the prevailing summer wind, and the green looks tiny from the tee box. My (rare) birdie opportunity went right over the edge of the cup and four feet past.

Ron Jackimowicz:

No. 5 is a downwind 181-yard par 3 where I made a nice save for bogey. My tee shot missed the green by a mere three feet and rolled down into the collection area on the right. A nice chip left me about 10 feet, but my par putt slid to the low side and I tapped in for bogey.

In golf, whenever a player intends to make a full swing the rule of thumb is that you should stand with your feet, knees, hips and shoulders on a line that is parallel to the line of shot - a position described as being "square" to the target.

Read story Strong bunker play requires good set-up and practice By Kevin Wheeler, Forest Hills Golf Pro Publisehd: Friday, June 12, 2009

Bunker play is an important part of scoring on the golf course. Better players would rather be in the sand than in the rough, because it is easier to judge a bunker shot than the thickness of the rough.
