Bay Area Hospital is a 172-bed, publicly owned acute care facility. It is the largest on the Oregon Coast and serves as the South Coast’s regional referral center. The number of physicians on the medical staff has increased from 56 in 1974, when the hospital opened, to 132 today. The hospital is the largest employer in the area with over 1,000 employees and $70.9 million in wages and benefits.

As the medical center for Oregon’s South Coast, Bay Area Hospital offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. The hospital’s inpatient and outpatient services include medical, surgical, mental health, pediatric, critical care, home health, oncology, obstetrical, and other specialties.

The hospital’s accredited Comprehensive Cancer Program was expanded with a Radiation Therapy Center in 1990. Cancer patients can receive radiation treatments, surgical intervention, and chemotherapy close to home. The latest and most innovative radiation therapy technology was recently installed to give new hope to cancer patients. A free family housing facility provides the comforts of home without the hardship of travel while patients undergo radiation therapy. The Cancer Registry maintains a lifetime annual follow-up service and a complete database of all cancer patients treated at the hospital since 1985.

The first major expansion in 27 years is complete with the addition of 43,000 square feet of new space and another 23,000 square feet of remodeled space. A new lobby, admitting, emergency department, radiology, maternity services, surgical services, short stay center, laundry facilities, and newly relocated helicopter pad were added to enhance patient care.

Modern technology has made diagnosis and treatment easier. New and expanded medical services include laser treatments, MRI, CT, PET, mammography, sterotactic breast biopsy, varicose vein treatment, laparoscopy, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine.

Physicians, nurses, and technologists are on duty 24 hours a day to meet the medical and emergency needs of South Coast residents and visitors.
