CURRY COUNTY FAIR Under the blazing sun
World Photos by Elise Hamner

Katie Carrasco hangs on while her passenger snoozes under a soothing sun as their zippy four-seater grin-mobile circles a track Saturday at the Curry County fairgrounds in Gold Beach. By the end of the ride, just a couple minutes later, KatieÕs head, too, was nodding as she slipped off into dreamland. The Citrus Heights, Calif., 3-year-old spent the afternoon with her grandma, Barbara Stockman of Harbor, looking at animals and visiting a clown handing out balloons.
Horses with riders sauntered lazily in a circle at a corral at the Curry County fairgrounds on Saturday in Gold Beach. They were awaiting competition in a nearby barn.

Nine-year-old Brittany Righetti, left, talks with onlookers about her Yorkshire cross, Dude, Saturday afternoon. It was Righetti's first time competing as a 4-H member at the fair. The Brookings girl and her placid companion took home ribbons in confirmation and showmanship. Throughout the year, Dude was a challenging project, eating up Righetti's profits from selling chicken eggs. "He's a healthy hog with a lot of personality," Righetti wrote on a flyer she handed out to potential buyers. On the first day of the fair, the porker tipped the scales at 280 pounds.
