The gardener’s cottage at Shore Acres State Park in Charleston is shown in this zoomed photo, taken from across the pond. The effect was created by leaving the camera shutter open for four seconds and zooming the lens at the same time.

Communities announce holiday lighting contest winners
At least two South Coast communities — Winchester Bay and Bandon — honored those folks who turned on the brightest and most creative lighting displays.
In Winchester Bay, boat owners decorated about 20 vessels in Salmon Harbor, making it difficult for the Winchester Bay Merchants Association judges to choose just two winners.
• First place in the contest was awarded to Alvin Gorgita, owner of the Kimberly Dee, moored on E Dock.
• Second place went to Dave and Cliff Blecher, owners of the Luckythree3, on Dock C.
• When it came to the housing part of the contest, judges chose the first-place masterpiece at 610 Clearlake Avenue. The home belongs to the Robert Bomark family.
• Second place was awarded to Al and Madonna Dial at 815 Broadway.
Holiday lights remain up in Winchester Bay this season to enjoy the light show, and the Merchants Association invites visitors to drive by. In addition to checking out the contest winners, people are encouraged to stop by Philip Boe Park on Beach Boulevard and the Umpqua River Lighthouse and surrounding U.S. Coast Guard housing complex.
