Lincoln Elementary School kindergartener Noelani Daily studies her opponent in the second round of the Coquille Scholastic Chess Tournament at the Coquille High School Saturday. More than 70 students, many from as far away as Brookings, attended the event put on by the Coquille Chess Club to promote the game. Play started around 10 a.m. and finished a few hours later with team trophies for elementary, middle and high school teams.

Dozens of chest sets fill a room at Coquille High School Saturday for the Coquille Scholastic Chess Tournament. Grade school kids played in this room while middle and high schoolers vying for team honors in the school's library.
