At right, Jenifer Smith, 17, Coos Bay, performs Wednesday for the judge in the western equitation competition. Smith was judged on how well she controlled the horse and carried herself in the saddle. Above left, she leans down to accept the first place blue ribbon from the judge. Smith is part of a group of riders called the Rock N Riders.

Above: Catherine Lowe, 6, North Bend, sews on a quilt at the Coos County Fair. This was the first quilt she had worked but she did enter other items in the fair: a pincushion and a jacket cover for a book. Lowe is the youngest member of the Sand-N-Sea Quilts. When finished, this quilt will go to a hospital.

Below: This handmade quilt, with its bright colors, depicticting cats with fish swimming around, was made by Barbara Jones of North Bend.

Below: This ride, “1001 Nachts” — German for “nights” — takes the children on a thrill ride through the air at the Coos County Fair. The kids on this ride are laughing and shouting for more. More rides, including the Zipper, arrived on Wednesday, the second day of the fair.
