State govs saying ‘No thanks’ to mystery laptops

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Hey it’s free, it’s a laptop, and it’s for your state.  Repeat after me, trojan horse, trojan horse, trojan horse.   I wonder for evey one that isn’t taken others are being taken?

free-laptops-for-government-agenciesCHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Even during tight budgetary times, a growing handful of state governors are proving too wary to accept laptop computers that have shown up at their offices this month, unsolicited.

The FBI was investigating after the governor’s offices in West Virginia, Vermont, Wyoming and Washington state received between three and five laptops – but none had ordered any of them.

Did Mexico beat it? Fans go for ‘Thriller’ record

Monday, August 31st, 2009

What a thrill, setting a record for the most people “beating in”.  Sounds like one hell of a party topic to me

thriller-breaks-record-mexicoMEXICO CITY (AP) — They say they beat it. Thousands of Mexicans claimed they broke the record for most people dancing to “Thriller” simultaneously in one place on Saturday, which would have been Michael Jackson’s 51st birthday.

“We did it!” organizer Javier Hildago shouted to thousands of people wearing black fedoras, white gloves, aviator shades and ghoulish face paint, breathless after trying to recreate the groundbreaking 1983 video.

Did they? The Guinness Book of World Records will decide in a week.

Man arrested for his 22nd drunken driving offense, with blood-alcohol level of .393

Friday, August 28th, 2009

This guy is inching awfully close to that “23 strikes and you’re out” policy …

(AP) — Police said a man was arrested on Monday for his 22nd drunken driving offense – and his blood-alcohol content tested almost five times higher than New Mexico’s legal limit. State Police Lt. Eric Garcia said an officer pulled up to a car parked along a highway and found a 51-year-old man on the ground near his vehicle.

“He was coherent,” Garcia said. “He showed signs of slurred speech, as might be normal for any DWI arrest, which led the officer to believe he might be driving under the influence.”

Garcia said the suspect had to be taken by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent hospital in Santa Fe, where a blood-alcohol analysis showed a content level of .393 percent. New Mexico’s limit for presumed intoxication is .08 percent.

Police said records showed the man has been arrested five times in New Mexico and at least 16 times elsewhere.

The suspect, who faces a felony DWI charge, was booked into the Santa Fe County jail.

Garcia said records showed the man faces pending DWI charges in Angel Fire and Espanola. He also was served with arrest warrants from San Miguel, Bernalillo and Sandoval Counties – all on DWI-related charges.

Garcia didn’t know if the man had any prior DWI convictions.

Chicken owner shoots own leg while hunting opossum

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

I think is taking protecting his chicken a bit far, shooting yourself in the leg to show your chickens you mean business when it comes to protecting them!   I am sure the opossum is still laughing about this one.  Opossum 1, Chicken Owner 0.

Elmer_Fudd_with_gunMOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) — A northwest Washington man is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the leg while hunting an opossum that had been snatching his chickens.

Larry Tenbrink of Mount Vernon was watching TV when he heard his chickens “carrying on” late Sunday. He figured the problem was the opossum that had already killed more than a dozen of his chickens over the past few months.

Tenbrink grabbed his .22 caliber pistol, headed outside and spotted an opossum the size of a large cat wandering his property. But he accidentally pulled the trigger too early, sending a bullet through his lower right thigh.

The 61-year-old handyman told the Skagit Valley Herald on Monday that he’s back home after a trip to the hospital. And though the opossum is free for now, he’ll be hunting it again. But next time, he says he’ll use a trap.
