Man faces jail time for yawning

Thursday, August 13th, 2009
Hmmm I am wondering if he is as bored with is incarceration as he was at the judges sentencing.  He may just think twice next time

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — Drowsy spectators in one suburban Chicago courtroom might want to stifle their yawns from now on.

Clifton Williams, 33, of Richton Park, is facing six months in jail for making what court documents call a yawn-like sound in Will County Judge Daniel Rozak’s court last month.

The yawn happened as Williams’ cousin, Jason Mayfield, was being sentenced for a drug charge on July 23.

Rozak found Williams in contempt of court and sentenced him to six months in jail. However, Rozak could free Williams after a status hearing Thursday, if Williams apologizes and the judge accepts. By then, Williams will have served 21 days.

Witnesses disagree about whether Williams’ yawn was out of line.

Charles Pelkie, spokesman for the Will County state’s attorney’s office, said the prosecutor in the courtroom at the time told him that what came out of Williams’ mouth could hardly be called a “yawn.”

Six months is the maximum sentence judges can give for criminal contempt without a jury trial.

Chronic shoplifter pleads guilty in 61st arrest

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

After being arrested more than 60 time isn’t a plea of guilty almost a formality?   I have to say she dedicated to the art of shoplifting, too bad it’s illegal.

CHICAGO (AP) — An 86-year-old Chicagoan who’s been arrested more than 60 times pleaded guilty to the latest charge against her after being accused of stealing wrinkle cream and other items from a grocery store.

Ella Orko was arrested Aug. 2 after authorities say she stuffed $252 worth of items into her pants, including cosmetics, salmon, batteries and instant coffee.

Orko had been charged with felony shoplifting, but that was reduced to a misdemeanor in exchange for her guilty plea Monday.

Judge Marvin Luckman sentenced her to two days in jail, which is what she’s already served.

Man on lawnmower during beer run charged with DUI

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

You know you have either a drinking problem or a supply problem if you are taking your riding lawnmower for your next brewsky! They should have ticketed him for driving under the posted speed limit too.

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — With a revoked license because of a previous drunken-driving conviction, Dennis Cretton shouldn’t drive. But authorities said that didn’t stop the 49-year-old man from drunkenly driving up to a gas station for more beer – on his yellow riding lawnmower.

Cretton was charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence after neighbors reported he was weaving in and out of traffic on his lawnmower Friday night.
