Wedding ring found in dump amid 10 tons of trash

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

I have never been one to think that looking through a haystack was worth it for a needle, but if it’s diamonds the rules change.  That is pretty cool that it was found.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. (AP) — Sanitation workers sorted through 10 tons of trash to recover a wedding ring accidentally thrown away by a New Jersey couple.

Bridget Pericolo had placed the ring in a cup that her husband, Angelo, threw out with the garbage before leaving for work. When he realized the mistake, he contacted the town’s sanitation supervisor, who suggested coming by the Parsippany dump.

Supervisor Michael Brotons and sanitation workers Edgar Lopez and Joseph McGee dug through the refuse until they found the garbage bag that Angelo Pericolo had thrown away.

The Pericolos recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.

Man took $470,000 in pay from company he never worked for

Monday, October 26th, 2009

I’d hate to be in this guys shoes and have to pay that all back.  I had something like this happen when I was working for a major tech firm.  I got an inter-office mail, opened it.  There was a check in there that said bonus and it had my name on it.  The bonus was just under $30,000.   I was thinking WHAT THE HECK.  Then I looked in the company directory and there was another with my same name.  I really wanted his job.

SOMERVILLE, N.J. (AP) — An Illinois man has admitted banking more than $470,000 in paychecks from a New Jersey company he never worked for.

Thirty-five-year-old Anthony Armatys (AHR’-muh-tees) of Palatine, Ill., pleaded guilty Monday in New Jersey Superior Court to one count of theft as part of a plea bargain.

Prosecutors say Armatys accepted a job with Basking Ridge, N.J.-based telecommunications company Avaya Inc. in September 2002, then changed his mind. But the company’s computer system never removed his name from the payroll.

Paychecks were deposited into his bank account until February 2007, when Avaya auditors discovered the mistake.

Prosecutors are recommending a six-year prison term and restitution. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 8.

1,400-pound bull drags officers down NJ street

Monday, September 28th, 2009

So what is the moral to this story?   If a 1,400 pound bull asks you for your donut, you give him your donut, no questions asked!

PATERSON, N.J. (AP) — Police say a 1,400-pound bull that escaped from a northern New Jersey slaughterhouse dragged officers with a lasso down a street and ran 10 blocks before being captured and sedated. Chief John DeCando, spokesman for Paterson Police’s animal control division, says the bull was being unloaded at ENA Meat Packing Inc. when it broke loose just before 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Police tried to corral the bull by lassoing a rope around the animal’s neck, but it dragged officers down the street instead.

DeCando says traffic was light during the bull run. He says the area where the officers were dragged was not residential or near a school.

Officers finally corralled the animal and DeCando was able to sedate it.

No injuries were reported. The bull was returned to the slaughterhouse.

Vegan group sues in NJ to put warning labels on hot dogs

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

WTH?  Hotdogs can cause cancer?   What is this world coming too?   Where would baseball be without hotdogs, and what would generations of TV watchers do when they see a Sabrett’s hot dog stand on TV.  No more “OMG those are so good”, now it will be “Yep, they killed uncle Jimmy”.  Woe is US!

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Hot dogs may be as American as baseball and apple pie, but an anti-meat advocacy group says they’re hazardous to your health and should carry warning labels.

The group, called the Cancer Project, wants to force hot dog makers to use warning labels. An offshoot of a pro-vegetarian organization, the Cancer Project filed a lawsuit Wednesday in Superior Court in Newark on behalf of three New Jersey residents. The defendants are Kraft Foods Inc., manufacturer of the Oscar Mayer brand; Sara Lee Corp.; Nathan’s Famous; and the makers of the Hebrew National and Sabrett brands.

The lawsuit cites a report by the American Institute for Cancer Research that concluded regular consumption of processed meat can increase the risk of colorectal and other forms of cancer.
