9 1/2-foot wide home, dubbed NYC’s ’skinniest’ house, on sale for a fat $2.7 million

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

skinny_house_new_yorkThis reminds me of the shrinking house in Harry Potter.  I am not sure I’d want to live in a 3 story house that is a mere 9 1/2 feet wide, it’d be too… well.. thinning.

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s 9 1/2 feet wide and 42 feet long and is billed as the narrowest house in New York City. But there’s nothing small about its asking price: $2.7 million.

Located at 75 1/2 Bedford St. in Greenwich Village, the red brick building was built in 1873, sandwiched in a narrow space that used to be an alley between homes at 75 and 77 Bedford.

The narrow house is considered a curiosity and is one of the neighborhood’s most photographed homes. A small plaque on the house notes that poet Edna St. Vincent Millay once lived there; so did anthropologist Margaret Mead.

Woman, 75, drives 2 miles on bridge the wrong way

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Police said a 75-year-old woman drove the wrong way on New York’s Tappan Zee Bridge. State police in Tarrytown said the woman entered the highway from the Exit 9 off-ramp Sunday morning and drove north in the southbound lanes of the bridge. She drove about two miles before she was stopped.

She told police she knew she had been driving the wrong way but kept going because she thought there would be a place to make a U-turn.

She was given tickets for improperly entering a highway, driving in the wrong direction and reckless driving.

Eight people died on July 26 when Diane Schuler drove a van carrying her three nieces and her own two children the wrong way on the Taconic State Parkway. She crashed head-on into an SUV.

Police: Texting, talking NY trucker hits car, pool

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Hmmm. . .  Wonder what was so important that he had to text while driving a Semi.   Texting in a car is bad enough but add 80,000 pounds to the equation and watch out.

LOCKPORT, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a western New York tow truck driver was texting on one cell phone while talking on another when he slammed into a car and crashed into a swimming pool.

Niagara County sheriff’s deputies say 25-year-old Nicholas Sparks of Burt admitted he was texting and talking when his flatbed truck hit the car Wednesday morning in Lockport, which is outside Buffalo.

The truck then crashed through a fence and sideswiped a house before rolling into an in-ground pool.

Police say the 68-year-old woman driving the car suffered head injuries and was in good condition. Her 8-year-old niece suffered minor injuries.

Sparks was charged with reckless driving, talking on a cell phone and following too closely. It couldn’t be determined Thursday whether he has a lawyer.
